Nurse Family Partnership is back in Carbon County! We have a few openings for this wonderful FREE program, call 307-328-2675 to see if you qualify and to get enrolled.

Nurse Family Partnership is an evidence based, community health program that helps transform lives of mothers pregnant with their first child. NFP is a community healthcare program that yields quantifiable social benefits and a substantial return on the community’s investment. Each mother served by NFP is partnered with a registered nurse early in her pregnancy and receives ongoing nurse home visits that continue through her child’s second birthday. More than 30 years of evidence from randomized, controlled trials prove this maternal health program’s effectiveness guiding low-income, first-time moms and their children to successful futures. By developing strong family foundations, this program establishes better, safer, and stronger communities for generations to come.

Developing Relationships

In the Nurse Family Partnership program we strive for a successful relationship with our client. “A successful relationship occurs when we make emotional deposits to the client and avoid withdrawals. Deposits include: seek first to understand, keep promises, be reliable, clarify expectations, apologize when necessary, be open to feedback, be trusting, respectful, and empathetic, and to always be kind and courteous.” (Sue Smith RN, BSN MCH Coordinator)

Consistent Program Effects Across Multiple Trials

Nurse Family Partnership has been carefully tested during nearly 30 years of ongoing, longitudinal, randomized trials. These scientifically controlled studies have found consistent and dramatic benefits for first time, low-income mothers and their children. NFP outcomes include:

  • Improved prenatal health
  • Fewer childhood injuries
  • Fewer subsequent pregnancies
  • Increased interval between births
  • Increased maternal employment
  • Improved school readiness

Nurse Family Partnership Framework

There are three theories that provide framework for practice in the Nurse Family Partnership:

  • Human Ecology
  • Attachment
  • Self– Efficacy

Human Ecology focuses on the importance of changes in roles– such as a young woman becoming a parent.

Attachment theory focuses the nurses attention on the importance of a mother’s awareness and attitudes towards her baby during pregnancy and the development of secure attachments between the baby and the baby’s consistent caregivers.

Self– Efficacy provides a useful framework for promoting women’s health– related behavior during pregnancy, care of their children, and personal development.

The NFP intervention will have maximum effect if you are able to interact with women and their families in ways that promote responsiveness, emotional connection, and confidence in their ability to succeed.
